Our Beginner Classes are taught as process-based rather than project-based, meaning, on the first day and half we will go through the fundamentals and steps to be able to make just about anything. This will include about an hour of lecture followed by a lot of hands-on exercises to develop your blacksmithing skills. After lunch on the second day, you’re free to make anything that you’d like using the skills you just learned. Students in the past have made anything from fire pokers to decorative ring holders, blacksmithing tongs, bottle openers, home decor, and MUCH more. It's always fun to see what students are able to create! Feel free to scroll through the photos on our Facebook page to view photos from previous classes.
Our standard "Beginner Blacksmithing Class" is open to any students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of blacksmithing. We welcome men, women, and children (13-16 years of age or older with a paying adult) in this class. Our "Women's Beginner Blacksmithing Class" is the same exact curriculum but is open to ladies who want to share in learning the craft in a women's-only environment.
Yes! The nearest hotel is the Baymont Inn and Suites in Albany, MN, which is about a 10 minute drive. If you'd like to consider other options, there is plenty of lodging available about 30 minutes away in St. Cloud, MN.
We love children who are interested in blacksmithing, however, we have an age minimum of 13 years old with an accompanying parent for our classes. We have this limit to keep everyone, especially the child, safe, as blacksmithing can be a very dangerous hobby. Students aged 13-16 can attend class along with a paying adult.
Due to the preparations, time, and materials that go into class, we do not currently offer discounts on class tuition.
Due to the preparation that goes into each class, if you cannot make it to class, tuition is NOT refundable unless we are able to fill your spot.
All hammers, tongs, and tools that you'll need will be provided, but if you have a specific tool(s) that you are comfortable with, you're welcome to bring them. Please wear appropriate clothing (cotton shirt, long pants, closed toe shoes) and bring eye and ear protection. If you do not have safety glasses and ear plugs, some will be available for purchase when you arrive for class. Also, you will get a 1-hour break for lunch during class. Most students pack their own lunch, but there are a few cafés right down the road in both Avon and Albany, MN you can visit.
